The Federal Government has launched an investigation into allegations that staff at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja, neglected accident victims brought to the hospital’s emergency unit.
The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, ordered a thorough probe after a video surfaced on social media over the weekend. In the video, a man who transported injured victims to the facility accused the staff of being slow to respond. The footage captured a heated exchange between him and hospital workers, with one staff member citing a lack of gloves. While one victim remained in a car, others eventually received assistance into the emergency ward.
In response to the video, Obadiah N.K. Gana, Public Relations Officer of FMC Abuja, announced on Sunday that the hospital had begun a full investigation to determine the facts. He stated that preliminary findings showed the emergency department had enough medical supplies, including gloves, and that resuscitation tools and medications were available. The hospital also confirmed it had sufficient equipment for patient transfers, such as t inrolleys and wheelchairs.
Hospital officials are currently engaging with on-duty staff and other involved parties as part of the inquiry. Gana assured the public that FMC Abuja would release the full investigation report once completed.
He emphasized the hospital’s commitment to transparency, noting the availability of multiple feedback channels, including phone lines, QR codes, and email addresses. While apologizing for any distress caused, Gana reaffirmed that the hospital takes public feedback seriously and remains dedicated to delivering compassionate, high-quality care.
Additionally, he highlighted the hospital’s indigent fund program, which helps underprivileged patients cover medical expenses. He said FMC Abuja has successfully treated many unconscious patients and reunited them with their families through its social welfare team.
